New Urbanism Article

New Urbanism Article

December 2007

For this project on the theme of “the real”, I created a faux magazine article about Celebration, the Florida planned community created in 1994 with investment from the Disney corporation.

The main text is taken from the seven-page list of rules that each homeowner in Celebration must agree to, including restrictions on home decorations, lawn care, and types of flags flown from porches. Found photographs of the streets and architecture create a tour from the residential streets to the downtown. Also included are quotations (almost always positive) from residents.

Law Journal Web Site

Law Journal Web Site

November 2007

The Michigan Journal of International Law (MJIL) is printed quarterly and has published most of its articles online for the past several years. Previous versions of the site relied on manual HTML editing and file uploads.

Because visitors are usually looking for a particular article, this redesign makes all of MJIL’s archives available on the home page, with each issue represented by an expandable horizontal band listing its authors. Journal editors can upload article PDFs through a web interface, where they are automatically grouped by issue and indexed for searching.

Global Population Booklet

Global Population Booklet

March 2007

In 2000 I wrote a college essay on world population growth trends. The paper analyzed the agricultural and environmental resources necessary to sustain populations in developing nations, as well as the public policies that shape population growth.

For this book, I created information graphics of the paper’s key statistics and, with the addition of found photography, designed each spread as a visualization of a particular issue raised in the text. My main goal was to humanize the statistical information being presented (without sacrificing clarity) while encouraging a more integrated reading of the text, imagery, and illustrations.

Photography Infographic

August 2006

A chart showing changes in my photography habits from early 2002 through late 2006. The bar graph in the top third shows the total number of shots taken each week and, of those that were kept, the proportion I reproduced in some way (printed, emailed, or posted to the web).

The center strip is a biographical timeline, including my home cities, trips, and job changes. The bottom section reproduces a single pixel from every photo, categorized by type, aggregated by year, and sorted by brightness.
